Normal mode doesn't stop plenty of golds dropping in the other campaigns, so, no, it's not normal mode, it's EoTN specifically.

1. I think gold drops are lower in EOTN because of reputation grind, plus the more you run a map, the lower the drops. Don't have any proof of the latter, just seems that way to me. Even so, I get all the plat I need so I'm not complaining.
2. I notice something similar in WoW. When you first start a map, there is a "welcome wagon" effect. Lots of drops, but the drop rate and quality fades with time.
3. There are superstitious methods for improving your drops, not based on any official info from ANet.

Yup. Most gold drops are just not worth selling anymore.
They must be r9, perfect. Try selling r10 and the price goes so low that it is not worth standing in Kamadan or elsewhere. There are also very few items that still go for higher prices.
There was a general downtrend, as most items are now easier to acquire. Dwarven Axes can be crafted. Sephis Swords drop a lot in Duncan's Dungeon. Everything is so much cheaper than a year ago.
But in general I think enough golds drop in GW:EN and also in the Sulfurous Wastes. Besides the fact that most are merchantware,
I am more concerned about the GW:EN dungeons: They drop tons of items, more than 1 player with an almost empty inventory can hold. But little quality indeed, not many golds and purples.
So basically, more loot than one can carry. I would prefer higher quality drops but less drops in the dungeons. Then I would not have to start salvaging in level 2 or throwing away stuff in every goddamn dungeon, this really angers me all the time. What a waste.
BTW: Given the loot quality in normal mode, hard mode should make more than up for our concerns.

I've had more gold drops in the past week in normal mode in factions and farming UW than I had in GWEN since I bought it the day it was released.
It's like a 10:1 rate difference.

1.) Erm, isn't this your damn fault?
2.) The golds have not gone anywhere, drop rates still remain constant, which by all means is random at best. I'm pretty sure there wasn't some top secret drop rates nerf, and I just scored 3 greens in a span of 28 minutes with 7 henchmen a couple days ago, so I don't see how it's possible.
SOLUTION: get some cash and be happy
I understand what you originally thought, but just because you're having the Driver Problems and you're a bit unlucky with the golds, doesn't mean you have to complain on here.
Heck, why don't you put a suggestion in Sardelac, but, then again, Sardelac is already crazy enough.
Didn't mean to sound so harsh.

It's not the golds that's in demand right now. It's the greens and the inscriptions.

Just got 4 golds in 5 chests this morning. I also chest farm in sulfurous have no problem at all getting golds.
It's not a "bug". You just had a run of bad luck. I have expert treasure hunter on my mesmer with 1500+ chests opened. Most were in sulfurous and Mirror of Lyss, about 1/3 in HM. There were times that I thought, "man I'm getting enough grapes to work for Welches" and times when I couldn't believe how many golds with +30 sword grips and were raining down on me. Your luck will turn around.

Drops are rare in GW EoN period, however gold and purple are even more rare because they are supposed to be found in chests instead, for which you pay, er gamble 1.5k for a pick to get.
I actually find both sad and disturbing that Anet ever made it so that chests require keys or lock picks to get. In essence all they are really doing is deliberately preying upon peoples weakness to gamble because that is exactly what it is every time you buy a lock pick. In fact one of the first quests you get one of the rewards is a lock pick, thus Anet it is virtually like a drug dealer giving out free samples to get as many hooked on the gamble as possible as soon as possible.
Gambling is an severe addition for a whole lot of people; I would bet there are those that buy gold for real cash just to buy lock picks over and over for the thrill of the gamble.

I think what many of the people here are most agitated about is the fact that GW:EN was supposed to be a "high end" area that extended your experience beyond lvl 20. With that, as well as the fact that 1.5k lockpicks are being used for chests, people's expectations were considerably higher for this releases drops. The gold drops I have gotten in gwen, which have been soso in quantity have been horrid in quality, the chest drops, while they tended to be rarer skinned items, but with q13 typically making them completely useless in the selling dept. I tend to farm for golds solo, with a monk, yes i know very original, i can do a Fahranur run and vary from 1 - 9 golds in 30 mins. And yes as many people have said in this thread and hundreds others, you go through areas multiple times without doing other things, your drop rate decreases. Be it mathematical, flagged or whatever, it is just factual that when you repeat an area your drop rate goes down. I can do my monk farm 5-10 times and the earlier runs will always be better than my latter.
In the end, most of the frustration comes from what we "expected/assumed" would drop in GW:EN. Our expectations were raised because of anet's claims of it being higher end, and using lockpicks. We assumed drops would be more like hardmode, instead the drops/chests tend to be more like lower areas on other continents. I think the chest/drop rate for golds tends to be more like middle of the run areas on each continent.

I'm not complaining about the drop rate of gold items. I got one or two drop here and there by playing as normal. The only thing that bugged me is that, 80% of my gold drops are hammers. I mean what the hell is this, hammer time?
Ok some of them came with 15^50 or +5 ng, which is nice. Ah better than nothing I guess.

It happens to the best of us. Just switch to farming a different area for a while. I farmed The Sulfurous Wastes for a few days and my gold drops went to nothing but when I went to Mirror of Lyss it was gold city. Just make up a rotation of spots.

All of this is 100% speculation. People are taking their own subjective experience as truth, when it's absolutely not.
I can counter your experiences with my own. I've chest farmed in the same area for hours on end and had plenty of golds all the way through. I've had plenty of experiences where I was getting grapes at first, then after opening a zillion chests for an hour I started getting showered with golds from those very same chests (in that very same area).
So some people have one experience with chests while other people have the opposite. What does that mean? It means that chests are just random, capricious things. It's chaos.

Screw all the gold sellers, let people who buy gold be punished not the people trying to make some money or get what they want in the game and can't earn otherwise without being able to farm. IMO, anet did make rare drops rarer for purporse:
a) test to compare it effect on economy (compared to way too many gold and good drops in elona)
b) less chance for golds in explorable chests -> people go for dungeon chests and dungeon boss chests, yay for people actually having motivation to play dungeons.
c) rare stuff being less common -> it takes longer time to get it -> peopel spend more time trying to grind it -> ? -> profit

I got more gold drops before reaching Kryta with my first character in Prophecies than what I've gotten so far in EotN.

Every chest I've opened in GW:EN has produced a crappy purple item. Merchant food.
This was never the case in other Guild Wars versions. You get the occasional purple, but these locked chests in GW:EN are spouting shit, absolute shit. Not one gold since I played.

What you are describing is the farm code (where drops are lowered over time after repeatedly playing in the same area). It USED to exist in the game, but a.net removed it according to their update notes the same day they introduced loot scaling.
